“As a profession, nursing is increasingly focused on contributions that will improve society and health for all, requiring inclusion of skill building for nurses to achieve these goals” (Billings & Halstead, 2016). Curriculum development for nursing education programs must focus on the goal of creating desired societal values that will improve society overall and benefit the members of society. When contemplating beginning a new nursing education program the community of interest would be the people of the community and employment opportunities such as nearby hospitals, nursing homes, and clinics. Understanding the needs of the people and the companies that need to hire nurses can help to guide the curriculum development process in a way that will benefit society. For example, nursing curricula needs to include concepts related to patient safety, coordination of care, self-management, and health literacy. It also needs to emphasize the importance of the burden of health problems on patient and families, strategies to decrease the gap between practice and evidence-based practice and strategies that are generalizable across populations (Billings & Halstead, 2016). Focusing on these areas will help the nurses be successful in managing their patients care, providing safe efficient care and benefiting the overall society as well as the organization they will work for.

Contemplating the need for a new education program can be expected due to the issues influencing changes in healthcare and professional education. A task force can research and collaborate with providers, institutions, educators, nurses, consumers, and financers who are stakeholders of the community that can have an interest in change because of the magnitude and intensity of developing a program. The need for a new nursing program begins with an understanding of the community, resources, enrollment projections, and affordability (Billings & Halstead, 2016). As described by Billings & Halstead (2016), schools of nursing need to communicate the cost-effective contribution that nursing makes to improve the health of the nation to gain support to develop a new program. Nursing is supported by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing and is a resource for nursing programs and the promotion of nursing education (Pomatto, Giefer, Hite, & Johnson, 2019). It is important that educators remain current with national standards, expectations, and state-level demand so that students can meet their career goals and the community can benefit with better healthcare from a new program.
