Overview
This assignment provides an opportunity to consider how you might develop your capacity as a reflective practitioner, and how clinical supervision (a form of reflective practice) can contribute to better outcomes for service users. Whilst talking about psychiatric nursing, Phil Barker (1994, in Lakeman 2000) suggested that clinical supervision served two main functions, to protect people in care from mental health professionals and to protect mental health professionals from themselves. Clinical supervision has long been an essential element of psychotherapy training and practice and is encouraged if not mandated for most mental health professionals. Besides, this is your opportunity to explore clinical supervision in some depth and to hopefully become an informed and sophisticated supervisee.
