In your final paper, you must extensively research an important moral issue involving the media and/or information use. I must approve all topics. You won’t be able to use any cases discussed in class without my permission—so be sure to begin your search for a topic early.
Your final paper should specifically address: the problem, different sides of the ethical debate, your analysis of the problem, and finally, your own ethical opinion and assessment. The paper should be between 8 and 10 pages (excluding bibliography), double-spaced, and should include at least five references from outside sources, a bibliography and citations for quotes or concepts. Please use MLA style for citations and references (you can obtain an MLA style reference sheet at the RAL reference desk). The final project paper will account for 80 percent of your final project grade. Following is a sample outline:
Description of case; ethical issues involved
Arguments in favor of case; defend using at least two specific ethical theories (not simply deontology or teleology)
Arguments against case; criticize using at least two specific ethical theories (not simply deontology or teleology)
Your own opinion of the case; defend using at least two specific ethical theories (not simply deontology or teleology)
Please bear in mind that depending on your topic, you may be unable to identify philosophers who would agree with or defend one or more of the activities you describe. If that is the case, please thoroughly explain why you feel that way.
The grading rubric for your final written paper is as follows: You are expected to adhere to AP Style for your writing throughout your paper and use MLA style for references and citations.
