Label copy of museums objects.
Introductory text: states the main concept of the entire exhibition. Word count: 50-200
Section Text: addresses larger themes of the section. Might give ideas on what to look for in the section. Word
count: 200 maximum
Object Labels: These can be for a small group of objects or individual objects. They should explain the small
group and guide the visitor into looking closely at the objects. Word count: 30-50
Tombstones: Each object will have the bare essentials, which should include object name, artist, materials,
culture, dates, credit
Supplementary materials might include brochures, flyer with self-guided activities, time lines, etc.
Remember that in label copy, “brevity is grace.” Your visitor is not going to read more than one or maybe two
long texts. They are much more likely to read several short labels, so if you have a long label consider splitting
it up.
The Project Group should think about public programming that would accompany and complement their
exhibition. Most exhibitions are open for around 10 weeks and there might be public programming every
weekend. Each group should come up with between 5-10 programs. This should be a dream list so dream big.
Programs might include a film series, concerts, family day, symposia, speakers. Also address how your
exhibition programming fits into already existing programming at your institution. For example, many museums
have an existing film, music, or lecture series, so be sure to research what your institutions existing programs
are and explain how your programming will be part of or complement the existing programs.
