MARKING CRITERIA (ENSEMBLE ATTENDANCE/PARTICIPATION)

MARKING CRITERIA (ENSEMBLE ATTENDANCE/PARTICIPATION).

The School of Music expects students to attend all lectures, rehearsals, performances and (if applicable) workshops/tutorials/seminars
for which they are enrolled. In all cases, students are required to remain for the full duration of each class. If a student is unable to
attend a class or rehearsal, s/he must notify the Unit Coordinator (in writing) preferably at least 24 hours in advance, with a medical
certificate or other documentation supporting any valid reason for absence.
Ensemble attendance and participation assessment is based upon the following elements: attendance, meeting the expectations of the
ensemble director (as provided to each ensemble at the first rehearsal of the semester by the ensemble director), rehearsal
preparation, individual contribution to the ensemble, responsiveness to direction, and interaction with other members of the group.
Ensemble work relies on everyone participating fully to the best of their ability. 100% attendance is required for all rehearsals unless a
student has been granted approval for any excused absence by the Unit Coordinator or special consideration by their Faculty Student
Office in writing. Failure to attend without a medical certificate or other approved documentation will result in a penalty of 10% reduction
in this component of the unit, per unexcused rehearsal absence. Students with more than two unexcused absences will be deemed to
have unsatisfactory attendance/participation and this will result in failing the unit and the award of a mark of 0.
Please forward documentation concerning the reasons for any absence directly to the Unit Coordinator as soon as possible before or
after the event. In addition, students who feel that illness or other circumstances out of their control may have affected the quality of
their unit participation can apply for specialconsideration from their Faculty Student Office.
Attendance at rehearsals will be taken. Assessment of participation is ongoing with continous feedback from the ensemble director in
rehearsals. Each enrolled student will be assessed by the ensemble director/tutor(s) according to the marking criteria below, in
conjunction with ensemble-specific expectations, to be provided by ensemble directors at the start of the semester.

MARKING CRITERIA (ENSEMBLE PERFORMANCE)
Participation in the scheduled ensemble performance for the unit is mandatory for this component to be assessed. Due to the nature
of ensemble performance as a group activity, any student missing the performance (even for a valid reason beyond their control, such
as illness with accompanying medical certificate) cannot have this component assessed at a later date. Such students will need to
supply certification and apply for special consideration to their Faculty Student Office with regard to this assessed component of the
unit. Any student missing the performance without approval by the Unit Coordinator or special consideration from their Faculty Student
Office will automatically fail the unit and receive a mark of zero.
