LITERATURE REVIEW – GUIDELINES
Literature Review is a coherent essay that
analyzes research work that has been published on topics directly related to the problem under study,
explains how your research question grows out of that review, and
highlights how you identify your own research focus (in terms of “gap”) in previous research.
The purpose of the literature review is to know what others have discovered, before you begin your own
investigation. It helps researchers ground a study in a particular context of what is known about a subject, in
order to establish a foundation for the topic (or question) being researched.
Assignment Description
For this assignment you are asked to complete a literature review on the topic of your group project. The
assignment requires you to locate at least 5 educational journal articles on the topic, and write a 1-2 page
literature review on the articles you have selected.
You may find the following steps useful when writing your literature review:

  1. Formulate Inquiry Questions
Use your research topic to formulate inquiry questions that specifically describe what you would like to know
    about your topic. For example:
    Topic: Corporate Sustainability & Performance
    Inquiry Questions:
o What factors contribute to corporate sustainability?
o What are some obstacles to achieving corporate sustainability?
o In what ways does corporate sustainably impact firm performance?
  2. Locate Journal Articles
Use the online library databases to search for and locate journals that include your topic’s information. You need
to find articles, read the abstracts and skim the articles to determine if they correspond well to your topic AND
    inquiry questions.
  3. Select Articles
Select at least 5 journal articles and save them for your review and reference.
  4. Review Articles
Read your articles and begin to sort and classify them according to their findings. At this stage, you should be
able to organize your articles by sorting and classifying their findings in a meaningful way, always considering
your original topic and inquiry question.
  5. Write Review
Write an outline for your literature review, and revise to match the objectives of your research.
    Total Marks: 10
    Literature Review Format
Your submission should be composed of the following four components. Please note that the headings below are
only for your reference. Do not include them in your submission.
  6. Introduction
Write an introduction paragraph for your review. This paragraph
    i. states the topic and inquiry questions for this review
ii. summarizes the depth of research that has been done in the subject under study
  7. Body
Before you begin this section, be sure that you have sorted your articles into different themes based on the articles’
findings. After you sort your articles, it is important to give your sorted groups a descriptive name. The names of
the sorted articles can become your headings for each of the paragraphs that you write in the body of your review.
The body of your literature review will include,
Theme 1: a paragraph or several paragraphs that describe the first theme that you identified and
compare, contrast and/or connect the articles you’ve selected.
Theme 2: a paragraph or several paragraphs that describes the second theme that you identified and
compare, contrast and/or connect the articles you’ve selected.
  8. Summary
This is the last paragraph of your literature review. In this paragraph, it is important to briefly summarize the
main findings from the articles that you reviewed and to point out
how your research objectives were answered or not answered,
what the gap is in the previous findings, so you may make new inquiries to contribute to the field.
  9. References
This is the last page of your review. It serves as a listing of all references that you mentioned in your paper. Please
make sure that only references cited in your drafts will be listed here. Please use APA style when completing
    this list.
