ESSAY or NEGOTIATED LEARNING TASK

Submit a fully referenced, scholarly essay of 1500±10% words on the following topic:
‘Discovery and development of <insert name>, a product of Industrial Microbiology’

ALTERNATIVELY you can perform a task of your choosing IF DISCUSSED AND APPROVED with your Course Coordinator.  You will need to define the task and how assessment should be performed to demonstrate your learning in Industrial Microbiology.  An example of a task could include a review and assessment of a current industry practice.

This assignment is worth 10% of your final mark for this course and must be submitted electronically by 11.59 pmSATURDAY April 15, 2017.

Introduction

There are a wide range of products of Industrial Microbiology, including drugs, chemicals, insecticides, vitamins, enzymes, antibodies, microbial assays, etc.  Choose one product, but not penicillin, as your essay topic.

Each review must include at least 2graphics (figures or tables) of your own, or from references (with appropriate acknowledgments), which will not count in the word limit.  Reviews must be submitted as a MicrosoftWord file ( .doc or .docx file).

Look up suitable references using online databases and reviews (Pub Med, Web of Science and Science Direct are good) from the library.  If you do not know how to use these, see the librarian at the Information Desk (they were covered in first year in ONPS2334 Scientific Skills & Communication).

Format

Following the correct format is essential an aspect of publishing in journals and writing reports.  For some of your marks you will be judged on this aspect.  Write the essay in the format used by Microbiology Australia, taking care to provide subheadings, citations and full details of peer-reviewed references (lack of these will cost you dearly).  You don’t need to add the DOI, but you do need all other elements and the correct format for a citation.

Marks will be awarded for thoroughness in literature search, new material (not given in lectures), comprehension of topic, clarity and conciseness in summarising and reviewing literature, organisation, originality and correctness of format.  As a guide, about 10-15 references should be cited in the review and at least two-thirds of these references should be recent, original research papers, rather than reviews or textbooks.  Marks will be deducted for lack of correct format, lack of new information from recent, original sources and excessive length or brevity (10% for each 200 words outside the limits).  THERE IS TO BE NO PLAGIARISM; ESSAYS WILL SCREENED FOR ORIGINALITY.
