the Deadly Deception

the Deadly Deception.

NOTES:
This module explains elements of research methods used by social psychologists. Much of it should be review. Note the ISL readings are not tied into research methods.  Rather I assigned them early in the semester to start understanding social psychology.
I’ve also included Aldon Morris’ reading W.E.B. Du Bois at the center, from science, civil rights movement, to Black Lives Matter.  This was the annual lecture for the 2016 British Journal of Sociology, and based on ideas for the book: The Scholar Denied: W.E.B. Du Bois and the Birth of Modern Sociology.  Dr. Morris was the  American Sociological Association president-elect 2019-2020.  This will help us understand who frames sociology and let’s us think about who has power and authority, and how that shapes the discipline.
I included some classic works by Goffman and Mead from the ISL book.  They should introduce you to the idea that we form our “selves” as a reaction to others in society.  In other words, we are not merely the culmination of our genetics, personality and biology, but rather we become who we are as social beings by interacting with others.  Others shape our personalities and how we behave, and also how we see ourselves.
