Using the material (citations) you have gathered for Assignments 1 and 2, you are required to write a more in-depth analysis of the topic you have chosen. Note that you can also find additional citations (i.e., those not used in Assignments 1 and 2) for this brief.
Unlike Assignment 1, in this research brief you are NOT evaluating the arguments of others; instead, you are presenting your own analysis of ALL of the issues at stake around the topic, with citations.
You do NOT want to “argue” or “persuade” or “convince” someone of a particular point of view (the way an op-ed sets out to do). Therefore, avoid using “I” while writing.
Instead, you want to inform the reader of ALL of the different viewpoints, issues, unresolved questions, and areas for future research that relate to your chosen topic.
Think of this assignment as a “written brief” which you are presenting to someone else (e.g., a prominent government official) who has asked YOU to provide them with EVERYTHING they need to know about a topic. In other words, imagine that you are the “tour guide” for your chosen topic.
You want to be as comprehensive and unbiased as possible, so that whomever is reading your brief feels better informed about the topic.
