The social media app TikTok has gotten very popular within the last year with 60% of the users living in the United States (Huddleston 2020). The app allows individuals to share 15 to 60 second clips featuring music and filters. While this app brings others joy, it is also infringing on their right to security.

It is found that the United States is looking at banning TikTok and other Chinese owned social media apps due to concern over what this Chinese platform does with its users’ personal information. This would include sharing things such as; contact lists, email addresses and location data with the company’s owner and potentially the Chinese government (Huddleston 2020). The United States believes that with the information TikTok is receiving, the Chinese government will be able to use this data for espionage or blackmail. U.S officials are also worried that the app censors political speech, and it could be used to spread misinformation about political standings (Gertz 2020).

As the United States were looking for a permanent ban due to the reasons stated above, a full permanent ban would not be reasonable for the economy nor the benefit for the American people. These claims made by the government had no grounds nor a concrete piece of evidence. The Administration ByteDance released a statement stating that the date gathered by TikTok is being held on American soil and assuring the US government that the information not being distributed to the Chinese government.

The American government elected to go for a conditional ban which helped shed more light upon the situation without having to take any extraordinary measures which is what I am advocating in this post and it is what I believe was the smart decision.
