working days. As this is the final assessment task please remember to refer to the feedback given in the
preceding pieces of work and on the Cloud
Due date and form of submission Due by 8:00pm AEDT on Wednesday 10 February 2021
This is submitted online in the dropbox on the CloudDeakin site
Purpose
The purpose of this task is to resolve an actual or potential ethical issue affecting your own industry through
the application of an ethical framework.
Task
You have been invited to submit an article to the online news platform ,“The Conversation”. Their mission
statement, according to their website, is: “to democratise knowledge and work with academic experts to
inject evidence into public debate. The Conversation articles are influential in changing behaviour and
attitudes. They are frequently used as a source for evidence-based information in classrooms, the workplace
and political sphere.” You can read more about the platform, article styles, and view sample articles via their
website: https://theconversation.com/au
In your article you should do two things. First, discuss an actual or potential ethical issue that has affected
your current (or future) professional discipline in the past 12 months. Second, propose a comprehensive plan
around how this issue could be resolved, with reference to established ethical theories or frameworks.
Remember your audience may not be familiar with your industry or with the field of ethics, so you will have
to explain any theoretical or practice concepts clearly and with enough detail for a lay audience. Lay
audiences are people who have no expert knowledge in the area you are reporting on, so they will need
definitions and descriptions to ensure comprehension.
Some obvious examples of events that have given rise to ethical turmoil this year include the:
• Australian bushfires at the start of 2020;
• Rising climate crisis and resulting social and political action;
• COVID-19 pandemic;
• Emerging ‘Trade War’ between Australia and China;
• Investigation into ‘Lawyer X’ (Nicola Gobbo);
• US Election, and;
• Proposed digital media code around paid use of Australian media content by digital platforms such as
Google.
You could consider how one of the above events has produced an ethical dilemma or raised questions
surrounding ethics (i.e., actual or potential ethical issues) for your industry. Please note, you are expected to
conduct independent research and you will need to provide a reasoned, rational and defensible discussion of
your proposed strategy/strategies to the ethical issue/s raised.
In your article you will need to include all the following:
1. Briefly describe the event that has given rise to an ethical dilemma or raised questions surrounding ethics
(i.e., actual or potential ethical issues) for your industry;
2. Describe the actual or potential ethical issues arising from the event as well as any relevant contextual
information;
3. Identify your own professional position on the issue and provide an ethical rationale;
4. Detail actions and implementable strategies to achieve/support your professional position
(identified in point 3), including potential pitfalls and approaches on how to deal with them;
5. Your discussion in points 3 and 4 should include clear links back to at least one established ethical theory
or framework we have discussed this trimester.
Formatting Requirements
You must submit your essay as a .docx (Word) document. Please use size 12 font and double spacing, as per
APA 7th formatting.
All references should be formatted according to APA 7th Edition. For more information and guidance on this
format, please visit this APA referencing guideline from Deakin. There is no limit placed on the age of
references, but please ensure your references are still relevant to current practice (e.g., a reference about
social media, online communication or identity politics published in 1995 would not be relevant today).

If you are writing about people with disability, diversity or health conditions please use respectful language,
and also use person-first conventions where appropriate.
Please ensure that your name and student ID number are clearly marked on your assignment in the header on
the right-hand side. A separate cover page is not required.
Notes on plagiarism and academic misconduct:
Deakin University has strict penalties for cheating and plagiarism. Cheating includes getting another student,
staff member, or someone external to the university to complete part or all of your assignment for you.
Plagiarism means copying someone else’s words without acknowledging the original author (for example,
with quotation marks and a citation). Plagiarism can include:
• Copying sections from a journal article/book/webpage/brochure etc.;
• Copying unit resources such as topic guides/lectures;
• Copying another student’s/staff member’s posts from the CloudDeakin discussion board; • Submitting the
same work as another student (past or present), and;
• Re-using your own answers from a previous assignment.
Please make sure you write your answers in your own words. Changing one or two words in a copied
sentence is not enough to avoid plagiarism. In this task, content and understanding is more important than
your writing ability. To learn how to avoid these errors, visit this Deakin information site.
Plagiarism and cheating will be checked in this assessment task. If you are found to have cheated or
plagiarised work, you could fail the task. This may also incur other academic consequences.
What if I need an extension?
Please contact the unit chair Dr Susan Hayward (susan.hayward@deakin.edu.au) to arrange an extension as
soon as you know you may need one. You must apply for your extension in writing before 5:00 pm on the
due date. Please note that a late penalty of 5% per day will be applied to late assignments without an
extension, and submissions later than five days will not be accepted.
Extensions cannot be granted after the due date. In rare instances of misadventure that prevent you from
submitting your task or requesting an extension, please follow the University procedure for Special
Consideration, accessed via this link.
How will I be assessed?
The assignment will be marked per the following criteria:
· Reasoning: Demonstration of a reasoned, rational and defensible discussion of your proposed
strategy/strategies to the ethical issue/s raised (20 marks)
· Personal development: Evidence of personal clarification and development; i.e., consideration how events
has produced an ethical dilemma or raised questions surrounding
ethics (i.e., actual or potential ethical issues) for your industry (10 marks)

including potential pitfalls and approaches on how to deal with them
· Theoretical grounding: Evidence of the emerging and consistent application of clear framework/theory (10
